Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), adding 15 years to chronological age in those over 40 years.
Evidence from recent cardiovascular safety trials in T2DM is changing clinical and pharmacy practice in new ways that go beyond A1C lowering. These trials have been designed to gain a better understanding of the cardiovascular effects antihyperglycemic agents have in both primary prevention (i.e., patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease) and secondary prevention (i.e., patients with established cardiovascular disease).
This program will support pharmacists in understanding how the pharmaceutical approaches for patients with diabetes has changed in the April 2018 update to the Diabetes Canada guidelines, and the evolving role of pharmacists in vascular protection.
