- Cite the short- and long-term benefits of smoking cessation.
- Identify challenges that need to be addressed to improve patients’ chances of success.
- Relate several strategies for optimizing the success of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
- Probe for reasons a particular attempt was not successful and work with patients to identify strategies to increase the likelihood of success in future quit attempts.
- Identify and implement approaches to supporting and motivating patients who have not been successful at continued abstinence.
- Educate and advise patients on the advantages and disadvantages of NRT and non-NRT smoking cessation pharmacotherapy options.
