Learning Objective(s)

  1. Cite the short- and long-term benefits of smoking cessation.
  2. Identify challenges that need to be addressed to improve patients’ chances of success.
  3. Relate several strategies for optimizing the success of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
  4. Probe for reasons a particular attempt was not successful and work with patients to identify strategies to increase the likelihood of success in future quit attempts.
  5. Identify and implement approaches to supporting and motivating patients who have not been successful at continued abstinence.
  6. Educate and advise patients on the advantages and disadvantages of NRT and non-NRT smoking cessation pharmacotherapy options.
