All elderly people are at potential risk of developing undernutrition. Inadequate dietary intake is the leading cause of undernutrition in older adults, with progressive aging leading to a physiological reduction in appetite and energy intake. This is referred to as “anorexia of aging” and usually exceeds the reduction in energy expenditure, resulting in unintentional weight loss.
