Course Description

In this presentation, Dr. Alice Kam and Dr. Alex Melkuev explain that spasticity is a lifelong condition characterized by involuntary muscle stiffness and “uncontrolled contractions” caused by disrupted nerve signals after a spinal cord injury. You will learn that while spasticity can cause pain and limit mobility in both the upper and lower limbs, it can be managed by addressing external triggers—such as maintaining consistent bowel and bladder routines—and through medical interventions like medications, injections, or pumps. The ultimate goal of these treatments is to reduce muscle tightness and cramping to enhance independence and daily comfort.
