After participating in this program, GPs will be better able to:

  1. Counsel patients on the tactical options for supporting smoking cessation with or without pharmacotherapy.
  2. Become familiar with the different ways in which NRT can assist in a quit attempt, covering pre-cessation use of NRT, combination therapy and gradual reduction of nicotine use.
  3. Outline the role of NRT as part of a comprehensive approach to smoking cessation, which may include counselling and psychological support.
  4. Determine which of the available first-line treatment options would be most appropriate for specific patient populations.
  5. Counsel patients regarding strategies to overcome relapse due to morning cravings.
