Course Description

Atopic dermatitis affects up to 10% of adults globally, with higher prevalence and severity among people with skin of colour. This is a critical consideration for Canada’s diverse patient population. Yet, many patients remain symptomatic despite topical prescription therapy, often due to suboptimal foundational skincare rather than inadequate pharmacotherapy. This case-based program equips primary care clinicians with practical strategies to optimize AD management through evidence-based adjunctive skincare, emphasizing the role of ceramide-containing formulations in restoring skin barrier function across diverse skin types.

Participants will explore AD pathogenesis, review the clinical evidence for ceramide-based therapies, and develop practical counseling skills they can immediately apply in practice to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

This program has received financial support from L’Oréal in the form of an unrestricted educational grant.

  • Explain the multifactorial pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD), emphasizing the critical role of skin barrier dysfunction and how essential ceramides contribute to skin barrier integrity.
  • Evaluate the clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of ceramide-containing formulations as adjunctive therapy in improving skin barrier function and optimizing outcomes in patients with AD.
  • Formulate practical recommendations for primary care clinicians to effectively counsel patients with AD on appropriate, consistent use of ceramide-based skincare, considering diverse skin types and cultural practices.
