Learning Objective(s)

After completing the program, the GP will:

  1. Recall current Australian guidelines on the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with dyslipidaemia.
  2. Evaluate risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) as part of the patient’s absolute cardiovascular risk.
  3. Design an appropriate treatment plan for dyslipidaemia based on CHD risk and concurrent disease states.
  4. Review goals of therapy and integration of non-drug therapy as risk reduction strategies in both primary and secondary prevention.
  5. Assess the clinical relevance of other markers in the overall assessment of an individual’s absolute cardiovascular risk.
  6. Apply the principles of pharmacological management of dyslipidaemia, including the effect of each drug or class of drugs on atherosclerotic disease and serum lipids, including associated adverse effects and safety concerns.
  7. Discuss treatment strategies for special populations, with particular consideration for patient safety.
