Course Description

Asthma affects millions of Canadians. Severe asthma, although accounting for a small proportion of asthma patients, accounts for almost 50% of healthcare costs related to asthma care. Severe asthma also negatively impacts patients’ quality of life. It is therefore crucial to help patients with severe asthma to gain control of their disease and return to a healthy daily life.

Optimum care of a patient with asthma starts with an accurate diagnosis and assessment of severity. From there, the primary care physician can initiate therapy, with techniques for optimizing adherence and inhaler technique for optimum outcomes. In cases where asthma is uncontrolled despite adequate therapy, referral to a specialist may be warranted. Eligible patients may be started on biologic therapy. Even after referral, primary care physicians play a role in supporting and counselling patients.
