Learning Objective(s)

After completing this program, GPs will be better able to:

  1. Discuss stroke risk in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and describe the evidence on stroke prevention vs bleeding with novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) vs warfarin
  2. Interpret the real world safety evidence for the NOACs, as it pertains to patient populations
  3. Assess the impact of patient concerns regarding bleeding in management of AF, and the role of NOAC reversing agents in emergencies
  4. Employ new communication techniques to proactively engage in conversation and effectively counsel patients with NVAF in a time-poor general practice environment
  5. Engage in shared decision-making that aims to improve adherence to oral anticoagulation therapy, thereby optimising patient outcomes
