The prevalence of known type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in the UK has reached almost 4 million people and it is estimated that another million meet the criteria, but have not yet been diagnosed. The GP is crucial in the diagnosis of patients with T2DM through routine screening and evaluation of patients at risk. All patients diagnosed with T2DM require a comprehensive assessment to help to guide the different management strategies to improve glycaemic control and reduce the risk of diabetic complications.

This module will review some of the key considerations in the diagnosis of patients with T2DM and the important role of the primary care clinician in optimising the delivery of care at this crucial stage of diabetes management.
