Learning Objective(s)

On completion of the learning module, participants will be better able to:

  1. Identify the specific memory and cognitive features that raise suspicion for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and to be able to recognise and distinguish AD from other forms of dementia.
    • Review criteria for the diagnosis of AD and other forms of dementia:
      • Vascular dementia
      • Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD)
      • Corticobasal degeneration
      • Multiple system atrophy
  2. Interpret the results of various cognitive screening tools used in patients with suspected dementia (MoCA, MMSE, and RUDAS).
  3. Set management goals of patients with AD, including initial, long-term, and follow-up care.
  4. Understand current research regarding the factors associated with AD (smoking, cardiovascular disease) and the recommendations for AD prevention.
  5. Review and summarise new drug treatment trials.
