After completing this program, participants will be better able to:

  1. Recognise the inflammatory processes associated with COPD, and distinguish these from the inflammatory processes associated with asthma
  2. Recall the criteria used to define and classify a COPD exacerbation as either mild, moderate or severe
  3. Review the health implications of exacerbations and appreciate the prognostic value of reducing the frequency of exacerbation of COPD
  4. Counsel patients on symptom recognition to improve patient safety and early identification of exacerbations
  5. Differentiate between the available therapies for managing exacerbations, and identify which COPD pharmacotherapies are indicated in the prevention of exacerbations.
