Learning Objective(s)

  1. Recognise how sleep disorders impact upon activities of daily living, and appreciate the role of the general practitioner in their identification, diagnosis and management
  2. Describe the acute and chronic consequences of untreated sleep disorders
  3. Identify patients that require screening for obstructive sleep apnoea based on standard symptom recognition, as well as relevant comorbidities
  4. Understand the role of home sleep studies and their inter-relationship with sleep laboratories, and when to refer to a sleep specialist
  5. Recognise the importance of early diagnosis and optimal management of obstructive sleep apnoea with regards to patient well-being and safety, and improving cardiovascular risk profile
  6. Counsel patients regarding the appropriate use of the various modalities for treating obstructive sleep apnoea.
