Learning Objective(s)

After completing this program, the GP will be better able to:

  1. Systematically assess risk of stroke and major bleeding in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) receiving warfarin therapy using validated scales
  2. Assess the quality of existing anticoagulation management
  3. Identify and manage obstacles to the appropriate use of warfarin in patients with non-valvular AF
  4. Familiarise yourself with the Novel Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) and issues relevant to their use
  5. Identify patients who might be appropriate candidates for NOAC treatment
  6. Develop a systematic approach to the initiating, transferring, maintaining and monitoring NOAC treatment in suitable patients
  7. Familiarise yourself with relevant treatment guidelines and patient resources relevant to the management of patients with non-valvular AF receiving oral anticoagulation therapy.
