Learning objectives
After completing this module, participants will have an enhanced understanding of:
- How to recognise ACS in general practice – signs, symptoms and differentials
- Why there is still a high mortality rate associated with myocardial infarction, despite percutaneous coronary intervention
- The recommendations of Australian and international guidelines (Non ST Elevation (NSTE)) for the management of ACS, with particular emphasis on current positions regarding:
- Prognosis assessment
- Treatment options, including new recommendations on dual antiplatelet therapy
- How to manage side-effects associated with acute and long-term treatment of ACS
- The duration of therapy required for long term optimal outcomes for patients with ACS – when and in what circumstances to stop antiplatelet therapy
- The role of the GP in pre-hospital and post-discharge care in maximising outcomes and patient safety.
