Influenza is a respiratory illness caused primarily by the influenza A and B viruses. Influenza virus infection causes a wide spectrum of illness and presents an ongoing disease burden in Canada during the fall and winter months. Risk groups for influenza-related complications or hospitalization include older adults (≥ 65 years old), young children, and individuals with certain chronic health conditions. Annual influenza vaccination for all people in Canada aged 6 months and older reduces the risk of influenza and serious illness.
