La diabetes de tipo 2 es una enfermedad común que se controla en la atención primaria. Aunque las guías de práctica clínica recomiendan objetivos específicos en cuanto a la presión arterial, el colesterol de las LDL y la HbA1c, la investigación de atención primaria ha demostrado que solo una pequeña parte de los pacientes con diabetes de tipo 2 cumplen estos objetivos. En las Normas de atención médica en diabetes de 2021 de la American Diabetes Association (ADA) se recomienda que los pacientes cumplan los objetivos glucémicos, pero hay un mayor enfoque en la selección de antihiperglucemiantes que puedan mejorar los resultados en pacientes con diabetes.

En este módulo se hará énfasis en ofrecer recomendaciones sobre la intensificación del tratamiento con antihiperglucemiantes más allá de la metformina en personas con diabetes de tipo 2.
