Hyperkalemia Avoidance: Effective Hyperkalemia Management Using New Preventive Regimen
The frequency of urgent hyperkalemia is expected to increase alongside the increasing number of people with renal disease and heart failure. Managing hyperkalemia effectively is increasingly complex for clinicians, particularly in comorbid patients. Treatment approaches to hyperkalemia have typically focused on a standard regimen of agents but have not adopted regimens that will prevent critical hyperkalemia long term. This program will review the impact of hyperkalemia; a new approach to decrease the rate of hyperkalemia, particularly in comorbid patients, and highlight the benefits of prevention of hyperkalemia in high-risk groups, e.g., patients on RAASi; highlighting the rationale and clinical data behind them. The overall goal of the program is to support clinicians in optimizing patient care by helping them individualize the choice of therapy and integrate simple regimens that prevent acute hyperkalemia.

Upon completion of this continuing education program participants will be better able to:
- Describe the incidence, burden of disease, and impact on mortality caused by hyperkalemia;
- Review the place of newer potassium binder therapy in the management of hyperkalemia;
- Discuss profiles of patients that would benefit from preventive hyperkalemia treatment that allows maintaining optimal RAAS inhibitor therapy and dosing.
