Learning objectives
- Understand the epidemiology and clinical features of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Australia, including risk factors, aetiology, transmission, clinical features and complications
- Recognise the current evidence-based management of IMD
- Understand the approaches to the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease, including vaccination of high-risk groups.
- Recognise the challenges of disease management, given the lack of a broadly effective vaccine against meningococcal serogroup B.
- Realise the role of the GP in early identification of IMD, for the purposes of patient health and safety.
