Genital herpes management – QI&CPD – Category 2

On completion of this module, GPs will:

1. Understand the pathogenesis and epidemiology of herpes simplex virus (HSV) HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections
2. Recognise clinical manifestations and presentations of HSV infections
3. Know how to diagnose HSV using the available testing tools
4. Have a sound understanding of the management of HSV (including counselling, supportive measures and management of complications)
5. Be able to discuss genital herpes and cold sore drug therapy (including recent trends in duration of therapy) with their patients
6. Understand factors related to HSV infection in special populations such as immunocompromised patients and pregnant women
7. Appreciate the safety of antiviral therapy
