Genital herpes: a review for pharmacists – The Australian Pharmacy Council

On completion of this module, pharmacists will:

1. Understand the pathogenesis and epidemiology of Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and HSV-2.
2. Know the difference between initial and recurrent genital and oral herpes.
3. Appreciate the different clinical presentations of HSV infections, including the various stages of lesions.
4. Understand the impact (medically and psychologically) that herpes infections have on patients.
5. Be able to give an overview of the current antiviral treatment options for the management of HSV infections.
6. Appreciate the role of the pharmacist in the prevention and treatment of HSV infections through appropriate patient advice and education.
