Acromegaly is a rare disease that is difficult to recognize because of its wide range of symptoms and its slow progression. While it is diagnosed in three to four people per million, it is actually believed to occur in 60 in every million people.
Remember, patients often don’t associate their symptoms with a serious condition, so they don’t bring up the symptoms in conversations with their doctors. And because physicians see so few cases of acromegaly during their careers, the disease is not generally top of mind. That, combined with its non-specific symptoms, gradual onset, and slow progression results in acromegaly often not being diagnosed until the disease has been affecting patients for nearly a decade.
