Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious complication of cirrhosis that contributes to cognitive decline, frequent hospitalizations, and care challenges post-discharge. This 60-minute MOC Section 1–accredited webinar delivers practical, evidence-based strategies to improve HE management in hospitalized patients—from timely diagnosis and treatment with lactulose and rifaximin to optimizing discharge planning with standardized order sets and patient support programs (PSPs). Through real-world scenarios and clinical best practices, participants will learn how to streamline care, reduce recurrences, and improve outcomes across transitions.

Upon completion of this continuing education, program participants will be better able to:

  • Décrire the epidemiology, clinical burden, and care transition challenges associated with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) 
  • Discuss hospital-based management of HE, including the first-line use of lactulose and adjunctive use of rifaximin, as well as strategies to ensure treatment continuity post-discharge 
  • Implement a hospital order set for HE management to improve patient outcomes through streamlined protocols and coordinated care
