A reduction of 1% glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) has been associated with reductions in microvascular complications by 37%, myocardial infarction by 14% and death related to diabetes by 21%. Delayed treatment intensification to injectable therapy may be due to a myriad of reasons that may include concerns regarding problematic hypoglycaemia, complex or burdensome regimens, interference with daily living, social stigma and weight gain.
