The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF)\u2019s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)<\/a> is a global effort to implement practices that protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. More than 152 countries have implemented the initiative, with proven impact in increasing the likelihood of babies being exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months.12<\/p>\n

All healthcare providers working within any type of practice have the opportunity to implement the principles of Baby-FriendlyTM care and to counsel and support families to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding for improved health outcomes.<\/p>\n

In Canada, the BFHI is called the Baby-FriendlyTM Initiative (BFI).2 The Breastfeeding Committee for Canada (BCC), a Health Canada initiative established in 1991, is the national authority for the BFI in Canada. It functions to encourage breastfeeding as the cultural norm and implement Baby-FriendlyTM facilities in Canada<\/a>.3<\/p>\n
