When assessing and treating older men with suspected testosterone deficiency, differentiating between organic and functional hypogonadism is vital. While organic hypogonadism can be due to serious underlying conditions and is generally irreversible, functional hypogonadism is more likely to be caused by suppression of the HPT axis and may be reversible. Men who are overweight or obese have been shown to be more likely to have low serum testosterone concentrations.
