There are two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8160886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">main types<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of skin cancer:\u00a0melanoma and non-melanoma (basal cell, squamous cell, and sebaceous gland carcinoma). The prevalence of skin cancer in the Middle East is on the rise. In Saudi Arabia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10527341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.9 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the population is at risk of developing skin cancers. It is more common in men than women, and most cases are in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10527341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">61-80 age group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10527341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> types of skin cancer in Saudi Arabia. Malignant melanomas, which are the types of skin cancer that spread to other organs and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianskincancerfoundation.com\/skin-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">result in death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 are less common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Incidence and Distribution of Skin Cancers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Squamous cell carcinoma (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10527341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41.1 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is the most common skin cancer diagnosis in Saudi Arabia, followed by basal cell carcinoma (26.3 percent). The parts most often affected are the head and neck (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10527341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55.4 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). These cancers also occur in the lower limbs (16.6 percent), trunk (13.6 percent), upper limbs (8.2 percent), and pelvic area (2.3 percent).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recognizing the Signs of Skin Cancer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin cancers are easier to diagnose than deep-seated malignancies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-202879 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Squamous-Cell-300x300.png\" alt=\"Squamous cell carcinoma\" width=\"166\" height=\"166\" \/><br \/>\nSquamous cell carcinoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looks like warts that crust and sometimes bleed. This cancer can also appear as red patches on the skin, open sores that don&#8217;t heal for weeks, or an elevated growth that\u00a0grows rapidly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-202877 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Basal-Cell-300x300.png\" alt=\"Basal Cell carcinoma\" width=\"165\" height=\"162\" \/><br \/>\nBasal cell carcinoma <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manifests as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a persistent, non-healing sore, a reddish patch or irritated area, a pink growth, or scarring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Screening for Skin Cancer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpcj.org\/index.php\/dpc\/article\/view\/dermatol-pract-concept-articleid-dp1103a76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people in Saudi Arabia know about skin cancer and sun-protective practices are rarely followed.\u00a0Screening\u00a0for skin malignancies is crucial because early diagnosis and treatment can save lives. Examining the skin under bright light helps diagnose these malignancies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is recommended to have a yearly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin examination<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0The entire body should be examined since 20 percent of cancers occur in areas not exposed to the sun.\u00a0The patient should remove all makeup before the skin examination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you see moles, spots, or growths on the skin, consider cancer\u00a0a possibility.
