The prevalence of certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/course\/enhancing-oncology-care-for-breast-and-lung-cancer-patients-in-the-kingdom-of-saudi-arabia\/?courseid=3655\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has increased by 300 percent nationwide, a change researchers are attributing to widespread\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7505779\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lifestyle changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts predict that cancer rates in Saudi Arabia will double\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2213538320300424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a clinician, you can help raise <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/courses-catalog\/?eb_courses_page_key=0a74d67106&amp;eb_categories_filter=Oncology&amp;eb_accreditation=&amp;eb_product_filter=&amp;eb_profession=&amp;eb_free_paid=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer awareness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by discussing risks and symptoms with patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lesser-Known Risk Factors<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a robust cancer prevention system nationwide, many Saudi patients are unaware of significant cancer risks. These are three of the most important to educate on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Obesity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a strong connection between obesity and many\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9857053\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer types<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. WHO data shows that one in three people\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10086171\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in KSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is obese, while 68.2 percent are overweight. These rates are largely due to a dramatic increase in salt, fat, and sugar consumption across the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Low Dietary Fibre Intake<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diet heavier in salt and fat may also be lower in fibre. Unfortunately, a reduced fiber intake may increase a person&#8217;s risk of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10255454\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorectal cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Increasingly Sedentary Lifestyles<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7931121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical inactivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0contributes to cancer development and obesity. According to the WHO, 25 percent of men and nearly 40 percent of women in the Middle East are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/about-who\/regional-director\/sedentary-risks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insufficiently active<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among adolescents, 85 percent of boys and 90 percent of girls lack enough exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hepatitis B<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepb.org\/research-and-programs\/liver\/risk-factors-for-liver-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatitis B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(HBV) have a 25 percent to 40 percent chance of developing liver cancer. Worldwide, HBV infection causes 54 percent of liver cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HBV is widespread in Saudi Arabia and across the Middle East. Yet,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1876034123002423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 20 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Saudis report knowing how the disease spreads or how to prevent it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients need to understand the connection between HBV and cancer to keep themselves safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Early Warning Signs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because cancer rates in KSA have been historically low, universal cancer screenings are not widespread. By identifying the following warning signs and educating patients about them, clinicians can help more patients receive timely treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Unexplained Weight Loss<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5916078\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a reliable warning sign for several cancers. It is a reliable enough marker to warrant clinical follow-up, particularly when the picture includes other symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Change in Bowel Habits<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An unexplained change in bowel habits, including new and persistent diarrhea or constipation, may be a sign of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/chronic-diseases\/cancer\/what-should-know-about-colorectal-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorectal cancer.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The risk is higher for patients with other risk factors, particularly if the patient is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7079267\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under 55<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinicians should encourage patients to be aware of such changes and bring them to their doctor&#8217;s attention, especially when the person is 55 or older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Unusual Bleeding<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained blood loss is a potential sign of many kinds of cancer, including\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/uterine\/signs-and-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4961605\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood cancers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rectal bleeding, in particular, is a possible predictor of colorectal cancer.
