It is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moh.gov.sa\/en\/awarenessplateform\/ChronicDisease\/Pages\/LungCancer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fifth most common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer among men in Saudi Arabia and the seventh most common overall. Lung cancer screening, early diagnosis, and precise treatment can save lives. This article explores how we can provide lung cancer patients and the general public with comprehensive support to ensure access to the best treatment and quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lung Cancer Screening<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosing lung cancer in the initial stages is indisputably valuable. Survival rates change from 85 percent in stage 1 to an abysmal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6196665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in stage 4. Computed tomography (CT) scan using lower doses of radiation (called low-dose CT) is the strategy of choice for lung cancer screening. You can consider offering lung cancer screening to the following high-risk populations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals aged 50 to 74 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current smokers or those who quit in the last 15 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who have smoked 30 pack-years (one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s also recommended to evaluate people with symptoms suggestive of lung cancer, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing difficulties<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemoptysis or coughing up blood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unintentional weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent pneumonia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms often signify late-stage lung cancer. Diagnosis after symptoms appear has a poor prognosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also crucial to raise the public&#8217;s lung cancer awareness. Healthcare providers should screen patients for smoking and provide counselling. You can refer smokers to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6196665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking cessation program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any screening program for lung cancer should include help for smoking cessation. This will reduce the likelihood of cancer in people who stop. If you detect lung cancer, smoking cessation is even more important.
