It&#8217;s crucial to identify your patients&#8217; triggers, relieve their symptoms, and help them avoid suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Summer Allergies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer allergies are most frequently in reaction to pollen produced by grass, weeds, and trees. Tree pollen is most common in spring, while grass and weed pollen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asthma.ca\/get-help\/allergies-and-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peak in summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since these allergens are inhaled, most symptoms are respiratory. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asthma.ca\/get-help\/allergies-and-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common manifestations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are sneezing, itching, watery and itchy eyes, running nose, ear fullness, and congestion. Other manifestations are allergic conjunctivitis and sinusitis. Seasonal allergies often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asthma.ca\/get-help\/allergies-and-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Identifying Summer Allergies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with allergy symptoms may find it difficult to identify their triggers. Ask them to keep a symptom diary to help differentiate perennial allergies from seasonal ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seasonality <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/ijerph15081577\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gives clues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the cause. Trees produce pollen in early spring. Grass pollen is most troublesome in late spring and summer. Ragweed, Canada&#8217;s most common summer allergy, produces pollen from late August until the first frost. A definitive diagnosis can be confirmed by skin prick testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Summer Allergies \u2014 Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy symptoms differ in severity and frequency among patients. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1056\/NEJMcp1412282\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will vary accordingly:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Episodic symptoms. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral or nasal H1 antihistamine and oral or nasal decongestant<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Seasonal or perennial mild symptoms.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nasal steroid, and oral or nasal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1503\/cmaj.201959\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antihistamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a leukotriene-receptor antagonist<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Moderate or severe symptoms. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal steroid, or nasal steroid plus nasal H<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antihistamine. Allergen immunotherapy for patients not relieved by drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal decongestants are more effective than oral but must be used briefly to avoid rebound congestion. Intranasal steroids (glucocorticoids) are the most effective therapy for seasonal allergic rhinitis. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s13223-018-0280-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergen immunotherapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be given by subcutaneous injection or sublingually and requires readiness to manage anaphylactic reactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Preventing Summer Allergies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can predict the onset of summer allergies and advise timely precautions. Preventative medication is most effective if started before symptom onset. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/ijerph15081577\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immunotherapy before<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the allergy season also is useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advise your patients about measures to reduce their allergen exposure and allergic symptoms, which can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor their local pollen bulletins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin or step-up their preventative medication as advised (oral antihistamines and\/or nasal steroids)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try remaining indoors when wind speed and pollen count are high<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce outdoor sports, camping, and other activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep windows shut, especially on hot and dry days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install particle filters in cars<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shower and change clothes after outdoor activities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDBriefCase is a global continuing medical education provider trusted by healthcare practitioners around the world for their continuing professional development.
