It can be classified as melanoma and non-melanoma \u2013 non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) can also be further separated as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) based on the type of cell in which the cancer originates. Melanoma is a cancer that develops in the skin\u2019s melanocytes, or the skin cells located near the bottom layer of the epidermis that produce melanin. Skin cancer can occur when skin is damaged by sun rays or other sources of ultraviolet radiation, such as tanning equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4851991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe sunburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase skin cancer risk. Other risk factors include family history, chemical exposure, and immunodeficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin cancer is common but highly preventable through proper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/skin\/basic_info\/sun-safety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sun safety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; raising awareness can prevent it and help reduce its incidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is the Prevalence of Skin Cancer in Canada?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports for 2022 showed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/skin-melanoma\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9,000 Canadians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer, leading to at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9067380\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,200 deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Are the Types of Skin Cancer?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three main types of skin cancer \u2014 melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Other less common types include Merkel cell skin cancer, skin lymphoma, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/soft-tissue-sarcoma\/what-is-soft-tissue-sarcoma\/types-of-soft-tissue-sarcoma\/kaposi-sarcoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaposi sarcoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and non-melanoma skin cancer.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some common skin cancer signs and symptoms to watch out for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Basal Cell Carcinoma<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms on skin exposed to the sun. It can appear as an irregular brown patch or bump. A mole that bleeds or changes in size or color can be a melanoma. However, more awareness campaigns are required to highlight sun protection measures, preventive care, and early screening. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Can Primary Care Healthcare Professionals Recognize the Symptoms and Advise Their Patients on the Early Signs?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some steps you can follow:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform a thorough skin examination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myhealth.alberta.ca\/Health\/Pages\/conditions.aspx?hwid=aa78799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABCDEs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of skin cancer \u2014 Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour, Diameter greater than 6 mm, and Evolution or skin changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educate your patients on skin cancer and the importance of regular skin checkups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote sun safety to reduce sun exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refer your patients to skin specialists or dermatologists for accurate diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Are Current Recommendations on Testing and Screening for Patients in Canada?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin cancer screening is suggested for high-risk individuals.
