Vaccines have been used for decades as protection against viral illnesses, many of which can be lethal. Modern vaccines are safe and effective, and each year, they save millions of lives that otherwise might be lost to vaccine-preventable diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blog post reviews the importance, history, and evolution of immunization as well as reviewing vaccine programs in Canada and Saudi Arabia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The History of Vaccines<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first vaccine was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/historyofvaccines.org\/history\/vaccine-timeline\/timeline\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1796 in England. A doctor named Edward Jenner observed that dairy workers who were exposed to cowpox seldom contracted smallpox during outbreaks. Jenner applied material from a cowpox sore to an uninfected boy, who experienced mild symptoms from the exposure. After that, Jenner applied material from a smallpox sore to the boy. He was unaffected. This process led to an understanding of how viruses can be related to one another, as well as how immunity can be conferred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the next century, scientists built on the knowledge gained from early vaccinations and began to develop vaccines to prevent common illnesses such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and tetanus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Vaccination Programs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many governments recommend a schedule of childhood vaccinations designed to protect people into adulthood. The recommended vaccination schedules for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/healthy-living\/canadian-immunization-guide-part-1-key-immunization-information\/page-13-recommended-immunization-schedules.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moh.gov.sa\/en\/HealthAwareness\/EducationalContent\/HealthTips\/Documents\/Immunization-Schedule.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Arabia\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include vaccines to prevent diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, certain types of pneumonia, and hepatitis B.\u00a0Both nations also advise that individuals get certain vaccines as adults, such as annual vaccines against influenza, vaccines to prevent shingles, and COVID-19 vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the WHO,\u00a0over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immunizationdata.who.int\/pages\/profiles\/sau.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Saudi children\u00a0receive childhood vaccinations.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immunizationdata.who.int\/pages\/profiles\/can.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0receive vaccinations at slightly lower rates, with certain vaccines only having coverage rates of 85 percent. The lower rates of vaccination in Canada may be driven in part by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/blog\/back-to-school-2022-important-immunizations\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine hesitancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among some parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success of vaccination programs is unmistakable. In Canada, only five cases of diphtheria were reported in 2022. Before the introduction of the diphtheria vaccine, the\u00a0country saw over<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumofhealthcare.ca\/explore\/exhibits\/vaccinations\/introduction.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 9,000 cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>New Vaccine Research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to the first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/course\/ten-things-you-should-know-about-mrna\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mRNA vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to gain approval for use. The new technology proved effective at preventing severe disease and death from COVID-19, and pharmaceutical researchers are building on that technology.\u00a0Firms are currently studying\u00a0possible mRNA vaccines for conditions including Zika virus, malaria, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/course\/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv-the-unmet-need-to-protect-infants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pneumococcal disease, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/course\/herpes-zoster-hz-complications-and-prevention-strategies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shingles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So-called cancer vaccines are likely to come to market in the next several years. Pharmaceutical firms are seeking approval\u00a0for new mRNA-based personalized cancer vaccines (PCV) for the treatment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/fr\/course\/subungual-melanoma-sm-screening-and-diagnosis-within-family-practice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melanoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
