Hence, April has been designated as Parkinson\u2019s Awareness Month. To honour and promote this spirit of Parkinson&#8217;s awareness, here\u2019s some of the latest information on Parkinson\u2019s disease diagnosis and treatment to broaden your horizons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Updates in Parkinson\u2019s Disease Diagnosis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinson\u2019s disease is mainly diagnosed clinically through medical history and motor or movement-related symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and balance issues. At the molecular level, abnormal clusters of misfolded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaeljfox.org\/news\/breaking-news-parkinsons-disease-biomarker-found\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofllow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alpha-synuclein proteins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are characteristic of Parkinson\u2019s disease. Thus, spinal taps and skin (including nerve) biopsies to detect this protein may come in handy while trying to make a conclusive Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis. Other diagnostic modalities include the use of positron emission tomography <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/pet-scan\/about\/pac-20385078#:~:text=A%20positron%20emission%20tomography%20(PET)%20scan%20is%20an%20imaging%20test,normal%20and%20abnormal%20metabolic%20activity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofllow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(PET) scans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to identify alpha-synuclein accumulation in the brain. Alpha-synuclein radiotracers are still being developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since a lack of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/22581-dopamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofllow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine neurotransmitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stimulation is mainly responsible for the motor symptoms of Parkinson\u2019s disease, dopamine transporters (daT) have become one of the most popular biomarkers to be studied.
