Let&#8217;s explore its prevalence and impact on the Canadian and Saudi populations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Colorectal Cancer?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/colorectal\/what-is-colorectal-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to the presence of malignant cells in the colon or rectum. Colon cancer and rectal cancer are grouped together because the tissue of the two organs is similar, and there is not a clear demarcation between them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes within the colon or rectum can result in precancerous conditions, including adenomas and hereditary colorectal syndromes. Cancer most often develops in the mucous glands of the colon and rectum, resulting in adenocarcinoma. In rare cases, small cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma can develop in the colon or rectum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who Is at Risk for Colorectal Cancer?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancers are quite common. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/colorectal\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that over 24,000 Canadians were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2022, and the disease led to 94,000 deaths. It is the fourth most common cancer diagnosis in Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancer is more common in men than women. One in 14 Canadian men will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime, compared to 1 in 18 women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fonc.2021.730689\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Arabia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, colorectal cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in men and the third most common in women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/content\/dam\/cancer-org\/research\/cancer-facts-and-statistics\/colorectal-cancer-facts-and-figures\/colorectal-cancer-facts-and-figures-2020-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for colorectal cancers. Most cases are diagnosed in people over 40 years old, with incidence numbers rising in every decade of life after that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other risk factors for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/colorectal\/risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorectal cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family history of colorectal cancer or precancerous conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal history of cancer such as breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory bowel disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diab\u00e8te<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle factors such as excessive weight, a diet high in processed meats, smoking, alcohol consumption, or sedentary behaviour<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Are Current Treatments for Colorectal Cancer?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment varies by the stage and location of the cancer cells. The most commonly prescribed treatment protocols include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radiofrequency ablation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cryosurgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemotherapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radiation therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Targeted therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immunotherapy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgery is typically the first line of treatment regardless of staging. Excision is often possible with local tumours, with surgery, ablation, or cryosurgery. Resection of the colon with anastomosis is used for larger tumours. In some cases, patients require resection of the colon with\u00a0colostomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow-up treatment may be necessary when cancer has spread or surgery cannot remove all tumour cells. Rectal cancer has a higher likelihood of recurrence, so additional treatment and monitoring after surgery are often recommended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>New and Recent Studies on Colorectal Cancer\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/colorectal\/research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has focused on the screening and prevention of colorectal cancers. New screening methods such as fecal immunochemical tests (FIT), stool DNA testing, and blood tests to detect biomarkers related to colorectal cancer have shown promise. Less invasive imaging tests like CT colonography and capsule endoscopy are alternatives to traditional colonoscopy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have developed immunotherapies such as monoclonal antibodies and immune checkpoint inhibitors that provoke the immune system to attack cancer cells. Investigators are studying whether existing targeted therapy drugs are effective against colorectal cancers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Importance of Early Screening\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancer screenings allow doctors to identify precancerous changes and remove the abnormal cells before cancer can develop. Screening can also help identify cancer in earlier, more localized stages when treatment is easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cureus.com\/articles\/104613-colorectal-cancer-and-its-screening-among-public-in-the-western-region-of-saudi-arabia#!\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Arabia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Saudi Cancer Registry found that almost 44.6% of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer have a chance of five-year survival. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/colorectal\/prognosis-and-survival\/survival-statistics#:~:text=In%20Canada%2C%20the%205%2Dyear,5%20years%20after%20their%20diagnosis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 67% of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer will survive for at least 5 years after their diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Are the Early Symptoms and Signs of Colorectal Cancer?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early stages, colorectal cancer may not cause any symptoms. As tumours grow and spread, patients may experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/colorectal\/signs-and-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rectum not feeling completely empty after a bowel movement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood in the stool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rectal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal discomfort such as gas, abdominal cramps, and feeling bloated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rectal pain or discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass in the abdomen or rectum<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue and weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowel obstruction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen lymph nodes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the abdomen, back, buttocks, or legs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>When Should Healthcare Providers Refer Patients for Colorectal Cancer Screenings?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian Cancer Society <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/find-cancer-early\/get-screened-for-colorectal-cancer\/when-should-i-be-screened-for-colorectal-cancer#:~:text=Our%20recommendation,test%20is%20right%20for%20you.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that adults ages 50 to 74 and those not at high risk for colorectal cancer should have a stool test every two years. People at higher risk should discuss additional screening options with their doctors. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Saudi Arabia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6074460\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for colorectal cancer among asymptomatic persons at average-risk is recommended. The current recommended age to start screening is 45 years, however, further research on the threshold age is required. In most cases screening is not recommended for persons above the age of 70 years.
