In comparison, while a migraine causes a severe headache, the headache is only one symptom of the disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches are common and come and go with stress, congestion, hunger, eyestrain, caffeine withdrawal, and other causes. They can be chronic and cause severe pain, but the pain is usually the only symptom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine, on the other hand, is a chronic genetic neurological disease characterized by overexcited neurons. Activation of the trigeminal nerve pathway causes changes in arteries, inflammation, nerve signaling, and neurochemicals. A migraine also often occurs in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/195\/4\/E153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five phases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though some can happen together or not at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These phases include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prodromal or pre-headache phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you experience painless symptoms a few days before an attack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Aura<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you experience sensory disturbances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Headache phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when the pain occurs and may be mild or severe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Postdromal phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the headache subsides, and you feel tired and unwell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interictal phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the time between attacks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How Common Is Migraine?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine is the second leading cause of disability in men and women across all age groups and the leading cause in women between the ages of 15 to 49. It affects\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/195\/4\/E153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of adults and is more common in women than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine is strongly associated with genetics. If one or both of your parents have migraine disorder, you have a 30 to 60 percent chance of also having it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Triggers Migraines?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers sometimes classify migraines by triggers, but some neurology providers\u00a0argue against this practice because it opens the diagnosis to too many categories. The goal is to relieve pain and other symptoms and restore function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Acute Migraine Treatment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing symptoms as soon as a migraine starts can help with faster recovery. Patients are advised to rest in a quiet, dark room to help with light sensitivity, and place a cool cloth over the forehead. A massage or a few cups of strong coffee can sometimes help, but taking medication early on is often important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/migrainecanada.org\/posts\/the-migraine-tree\/branches\/acute-treatments\/or-another-not-too-sure-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain relievers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-nausea drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription pain relievers may also help with severe pain, but the risks must be considered, especially for long-term use. This will help reduce the frequency of rebound headaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Preventative Treatment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no set guidelines on when to prescribe preventative treatment.
