This blog post describes the causes, prevalence, and preventive measures of RSV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is RSV?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV is also called respiratory syncytial virus. The virus causes respiratory infections, which can range from mild to life-threatening. It is spread through respiratory droplets and is highly contagious. The virus doesn\u2019t produce long-lasting immunity, so reinfection is possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV is considered a seasonal virus. In North America, it is most prevalent from late fall until early spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of RSV<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of RSV usually appear within 2 to 8 days of exposure. In toddlers, children, and adults, the most\u00a0common symptoms include\u00a0the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In babies, RSV may cause fussiness, decreased appetite, and changes to breathing patterns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, RSV remains mild, and symptoms resolve within 7 to 14 days.\u00a0RSV can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to bronchiolitis, which is a lower respiratory tract infection with small airway obstruction. In rare cases, it can develop into pneumonia. Severe cases of RSV can result in respiratory failure, apnea, or death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of severe illness include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noisy breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaring of nostrils with every breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue or gray tinge around lips, mouth, and fingernails<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laboured breathing or belly breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short, shallow, slow, or rapid breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pauses while breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Population Is at Risk for RSV?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is susceptible to RSV. Experts estimate that 90 percent of children experience RSV before they are two years old. Older children and adults can have multiple infections due to a lack of long-term immunity to the virus. The virus is mild or asymptomatic in the vast majority of cases among adults and children 12 months and older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with certain risk factors are at greater risk of RSV progressing to a more serious lower respiratory infection. Babies younger than six months are the most likely to develop severe infection. Other high-risk groups include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infants with heart or lung conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premature infants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children who have difficulty swallowing or clearing mucus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immunocompromised children and adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults over age 65<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults with congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or asthma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How Prevalent Is RSV?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV is extremely common. There are an estimated\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8282-respiratory-syncytial-virus-in-children-and-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worldwide infections\u00a0annually. RSV results in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nccid.ca\/debrief\/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv\/#:~:text=The%20age%20distribution%20of%20RSV,(late%20fall%20to%20spring).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.4 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hospitalizations and an estimated 10,000 deaths\u00a0worldwide per year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is the Difference Between Flu and RSV?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Influenza, or flu, is also a viral illness that causes respiratory infection. It has many of the same symptoms as RSV, including coughing, runny nose, fever, and headaches. Flu is more likely to have a sudden onset of symptoms. Flu is also more likely to cause significant fatigue and body aches than RSV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testing is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/lab-tests\/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for both flu and RSV. Providers can administer rapid antigen tests or PCR tests in-office. There are combination tests that detect RSV, influenza, and COVID-19. In some locations, at-home tests are available over the counter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How To Treat RSV<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild RSV symptoms can be treated with home care. Children and adults may benefit from over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to control fever. Rest, fluids, adequate nutrition, and a cool mist humidifier can ease symptoms and encourage recovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If RSV progresses to a more serious condition, medical attention is required. Patients may need hospitalization, IV fluids, and oxygen support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is one anti-viral medication &#8211; ribavirin &#8211; approved for the treatment of RSV infection in infants and, in combination with interferon \u03b12b, hepatitis C. It is typically only recommended for patients with underlying conditions that compromise immune function. It is not indicated for patients receiving ventilation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How To Prevent RSV<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standard hygiene and infection control practices can reduce the risk of contracting RSV. Providers can advise patients to protect themselves through:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent hand washing using soap and water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning and sanitizing frequently touched surfaces, objects, and toys<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping children home from school or daycare when they are ill<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding contact with people who are ill<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting time in large group settings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People at high risk of complications due to RSV may be candidates for the prophylactic drug\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/vaccines-immunization\/palivizumab-respiratory-syncitial-virus-infection-infants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palivizumab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This medication can reduce the risk of severe illness from RSV.
