Health Canada has recently approved two <\/span> bivalent COVID-19 vaccine<\/span>s<\/span><\/a>, one produced by Moderna, the other by <\/span> Pfizer-BioTech<\/span><\/a>. A bivalent vaccine is one which protects against two or more strains of a disease, in this case, the ancestral COVID-19 strain and the more recent Omicron variant. It produces a broader immune response that can help recipients of the vaccine better fight infection and prevent passing the disease on to more vulnerable friends and family members.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Should Get a Bivalent COVID-19 Shot?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

The National Advisory Committee on Immunizations (NACI) recommends a bivalent vaccine dose as a booster in individuals<\/span> 5 years and older<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although anyone who qualifies can benefit from the booster, it is especially recommended for people who are at <\/span> higher risk of infection<\/span><\/a> and complications, such as elderly people, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant or overweight people, and those who are otherwise immunocompromised.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because the bivalent COVID-19 shot is only recommended as a booster dose, those interested in the bivalent vaccine will need to have already completed their primary series. Vaccination remains one of the key ways to prevent infection and spread of COVID-19, but not all patients are open to vaccination. It is important to encourage them to consider immunization anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recent news trends have made it look as though the pandemic is over and everyone can stop worrying and go back to pre-pandemic normal. However, there are several factors that are not being addressed. At the height of the pandemic, people were being regularly tested, and their results recorded, giving us a clearer idea of how much of the population was infected at a given time. However, as infection rates have dropped, testing has also gone by the wayside. Also, the broad availability of <\/span> at-home tests<\/span><\/a> means that many test results are no longer being reported to health authorities. The data is accordingly skewed in favour of lower infection rates. Although the numbers appear to be dropping, vaccination is still necessary to contain the spread.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even patients who have been previously vaccinated may think they are safe without a booster.
