Learning objectives
After completing this program, participants will be better able to:
- Recognise the inflammatory processes associated with COPD, and distinguish these from the inflammatory processes associated with asthma
- Recall the criteria used to define and classify a COPD exacerbation as either mild, moderate or severe
- Review the health implications of exacerbations and appreciate the prognostic value of reducing the frequency of exacerbation of COPD
- Counsel patients on symptom recognition to improve patient safety and early identification of exacerbations
- Differentiate between the available therapies for managing exacerbations, and identify which COPD pharmacotherapies are indicated in the prevention of exacerbations.
