L’insuffisance pancréatique exocrine (IPE) se définit comme une activité inadéquate des enzymes pancréatiques dans la lumière de l’intestin grêle, ce qui entraîne une détérioration de la fonction digestive et une malabsorption des nutriments. L’IPE est parfois appelée la fonction pancréatique exocrine (FPE). Une digestion normale et saine exige une stimulation adéquate des sécrétions pancréatiques, une production suffisante d’enzymes digestives par les cellules acinaires pancréatiques, un système de canaux pancréatiques sans obstruction significative externe et un mélange adéquat de sucs pancréatiques avec la nourriture ingérée. Un dysfonctionnement lors de l’une de ces étapes peut créer une IPE.

Learning objectives
After completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Explain the etiology of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) and understand the clinical consequences;
- Recognize symptoms and signs of PEI and differentiate from other GI disorders (i.e., irritable bowel syndrome, Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, etc);
- Identify patients with a probable diagnosis of PEI;
- Correctly prescribe pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) and refer patients for specialist care.
