Antibiotics save millions of lives but their use can adversely influence the intestinal microbiota. Side effects include antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD), and possibly the more serious C. difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD). Probiotics can play an integral role in addressing antibiotic exposure by minimizing and even preventing some of the associated adverse effects, and by supporting a healthy intestinal microbiota.
