Approximately two-thirds of Canadian men (67%) and over one-half of Canadian women (54%) live with overweight or obesity, making obesity a major public health priority. It is important for healthcare providers and patients to understand that obesity management cannot simply be reduced to the patient being told to eat less and move more (i.e., selective focus on energy input and expenditure) in order for long-term goals to be achieved. Rather, obesity should be viewed and treated as a complex chronic, relapsing disease that is attributable to multiple genetic, environmental and behavioral determinants that interact with one another. Because of this, a long-term, multicomponent management strategy that is based on collaboration and empowerment is needed.
