L’incidence du zona augmente avec l’âge, en raison de la diminution de l’immunité à médiation cellulaire. Chaque année, un nombre estimé de 130 000 nouveaux cas de zona incluant 20 décès sont recensés au Canada. Une proportion allant jusqu’à 3 % des patients atteints du zona nécessitent une hospitalisation. Le risque de récidive après 8 années est de 4 à 7 %. Le diagnostic, le traitement et les complications du zona entraînent des coûts pour le système de santé canadien d’environ 68 millions de dollars par année. Ce programme portera sur l’impact clinique de l’herpès zoster, l’importance d’être vacciné contre le zona, les complications et les cas complexes du zona, l’efficacité des vaccins disponibles au Canada et les traitements de la névralgie post-herpétique chez les patients atteints du zona.

  1. Discuss the clinical impact of herpes zoster and its related complications on older adult patients
  2. Identify patients who would benefit from herpes zoster vaccination based on current evidence
  3. Detail practical strategies to engage patients in the prevention of herpes zoster
  4. Identify and manage post-herpetic neuralgia in patients that develop herpes zoster
  5. Manage complex situations such as herpes zoster ophthalmicus, herpes zoster in pregnancy, and possible viral transmission to unimmunized contacts
