Learning objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Review the recommendations for antimicrobial selection in IAIs
  2. Describe recent trends in gram-negative bacterial resistance, with a focus on intra-abdominal infection (IAI)
  3. Review the risk factors for patient acquisition of multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacterial IAI.
  4. Discuss the importance of inappropriate empiric antibiotic therapies on patient outcomes in IAI
  5. Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach including surgeons, infectious disease and medical microbiology specialists, emergency physicians, and other health care providers, for establishing protocols to manage IAIs
