Learning objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Review the recommendations for antimicrobial selection in IAIs
- Describe recent trends in gram-negative bacterial resistance, with a focus on intra-abdominal infection (IAI)
- Review the risk factors for patient acquisition of multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacterial IAI.
- Discuss the importance of inappropriate empiric antibiotic therapies on patient outcomes in IAI
- Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach including surgeons, infectious disease and medical microbiology specialists, emergency physicians, and other health care providers, for establishing protocols to manage IAIs
