Heartburn: Finding Relief with Non-prescription Proton-pump Inhibitors
Heartburn is a common condition among Canadians. It is associated with substantial discomfort and interferes with many aspects of life, including sleep. There are many non-prescription treatment options available, placing the community pharmacist in an ideal position to inform patients’ self-care decisions to ensure effective treatment options are selected and optimally used. This continuing education program is designed to provide pharmacists with the practical tools and knowledge to appropriately assess, manage, and monitor patients with frequent heartburn.

Learning objectives
After completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Describe the impact of frequent heartburn on patients’ quality of life.
- Appropriately assess, manage, and monitor patients with frequent heartburn.
- Identify alarm features related to complaints of heartburn that warrant medical referral to a primary care provider.
- Differentiate between the non-prescription therapeutic options available for heartburn based on efficacy and safety.
- Review evidence-based nonpharmacologic measures for the management of frequent heartburn.
- Describe the place in therapy of non-prescription proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
- Elucidate the pharmacist’s role in optimizing non-prescription heartburn therapy to promote favourable health outcomes.
