Learning objectives

After completing this learning program, participants will be better able to:

  1. Appraise the impact that the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can have on patients’ quality of life, and the potentially serious complications of BPH.
  2. Select the relevant tests and tools for timely diagnosis of BPH, and the role of these investigations in guiding management decisions.
  3. Accurately diagnose and actively manage patients with BPH, and safely acknowledge when to refer patients to a specialist urologist.
  4. Review the role of pharmacotherapy, including the mono- and combination pharmacotherapy, in reducing clinical progression of BPH and the likelihood of BPH-related surgery, and the implications on patient safety.
