The condition has a profound effect on self-esteem, mood and psychological status, but limiting the duration of active acne with earlier, more aggressive treatment reduces the likelihood of physical and emotional scarring. This four part Clinical Brief series explores how an understanding of the pathways towards acne development can help the GP tailor treatments and work in partnership with patients for optimal outcomes.

- Discuss the multifactorial pathogenesis of acne and its different presentations to select the most appropriate management options
- Evaluate the mode of action and adverse effects of acne treatments in order to select the safest, most appropriate treatments
- Counsel patients to improve compliance for optimal long-term outcomes
