Primary care physicians play a crucial role in mental health care, yet systemic barriers often lead to long waits for psychiatric support.

Enhance Diagnostic and Treatment Skills:

  • After the session, participants will improve their ability to diagnose and manage ADHD in primary care.
  • Linked CanMEDS-FM Role: Family Medicine Expert – Develop nuanced diagnostic capabilities and implement evidence-based interventions for complex and common mental health conditions.

Optimize Psychiatric Medication Management:

  • Participants will implement evidence-based strategies for initiating, monitoring, and tapering psychiatric medications, including supporting patients with comorbid conditions and managing transitions between medications.
  • Linked CanMEDS-FM Role: Scholar –Apply evidence-based approaches to medication management and improve outcomes in complex cases identified during the needs assessment.

Address Barriers to Mental Health Care:

  • Participants will identify and learn approaches to mitigate barriers such as resource limitations and health system challenges in delivering mental health care to specific populations, leveraging strategies highlighted during the session.
  • Linked CanMEDS-FM Role: Health Advocate – Promote access and system navigation to mental health resources for underserved populations, including newcomers, individuals from diverse racial identities, and LGBTQ2S+ individuals.
