- Recognise that overweight/obesity is a chronic, relapsing condition and that GPs play an important role in its management.
- Undertake regular weighing and risk assessment of patients in order to diagnose those in whom intervention for weight loss or weight maintenance is appropriate as well as to normalise these measures as part of patient care.
- Describe and carry out the steps necessary for weight management across the spectrum of body mass index (BMI), from early intervention in the overweight to treatment of the obese and morbidly obese.
- Apply behavioural techniques and pharmacotherapy to weight management as appropriate in relevant patients.
- Implement systems to manage overweight/obesity within their own practice including patient screening, stratification, management and recall, as well as improving communication techniques, and presenting treatment alternatives.
