Travel Health and Vaccine in Primary Care

A traveller’s health and wellbeing while abroad will often rely on the practitioner’s level of competence in providing the pre-travel primary care consultation. Travel health is a complex and dynamic medical specialty. Healthcare providers must understand this responsibility and be aware of the necessary elements of an appropriate pre-travel consultation, including in which situations to refer travellers to a specialty travel health clinic.

Planning Committee

  • Dominique Tessier, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FISTM.
  • Brian Aw, MD, CCFP, CTH®.
  • Darin Cherniwchan, MD.
  • Tim Kelton, BSc, MD CCFP (E.M.) FCFP CTropMed, CTH.

Learning Objectives

After completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

  • Make pre-travel health recommendations based on travel itinerary, duration and style of travel.
  • Implement prevention strategies to reduce the risks of travel-related diseases.
  • Identify clinical conditions requiring a referral to a travel medicine specialist or travel clinic.

Ask the Expert by Dominique Tessier, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FISTM

  • What are the responsibilities of the primary care provider when counselling travellers?
  • The new ISTM guidelines provide guidance for prevention and management of traveler’s diarrhea --- so why don’t they mention the TD vaccine?
  • How do you decide when to recommend the TD vaccine?
  • When should we use combination hepatitis A/B, rapid schedules, and monovalent vaccines?
  • What can we learn from Carla’s case?
  • When should patients be referred to a travel health clinic?
